Music
Music lessons are a national requirement in primary schools, but it is often so much more than a requirement for children! Music brings people together, improves health and well-being, provides confidence and resilience, is a creative outlet and most importantly… it is fun!
We use the Charanga scheme of work in Reception and years 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. The Charanga Musical School Scheme provides teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school. It is ideal for specialist and non-specialist teachers and provides lesson plans, assessment, clear progression, and engaging and exciting resources. The Scheme supports all the requirements of the national curriculum. In line with the curriculum for music and guidance from Ofsted, this Scheme moves away from the previous levels and learning objective concepts to an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning.
In Year 4, we use a specialist teacher who teaches ukulele. Her aim is for children to learn to play a different tuned instrument that is not provided by the Charanga scheme. She teaches them to read different musical notes on a stave, compose and improvise.
Children also have the opportunity to continue their love of music with individual lessons provided by peripatetic teachers.
By the end of primary school, children will be exposed to a variety of different musical artists, instruments and opportunities, giving them the confidence continue their musical journey in high school.
